Cooke officially retires at the end of the month after serving the county for more than 15 years. Commissioners appointed Durham at their regular meeting on Monday.

Durham served as deputy manager since 2001 and previously served as county manager for Edgecombe County. He will serve until a new county manager is formally selected by Commissioners next year.

Cooke announced his retirement in July. Durham will begin his duties Dec. 1.
